An Illustrated Talk by Dr Janet Pennington

THE ADUR VALLEY AND ITS HISTORY (with windmills!)

This talk will be a pictorial stroll up and down the River Adur, from Lancing College to Bramber Castle on the west - then through Bramber and Upper Beeding, and over the South Downs on the east, with views of Old Erringham and Old Shoreham - then across the Old Toll Bridge (lots of Old things…).

There will be four windmills on the way - a special addition for the Friends of West Blatchington Windmill. Here is Bramber Windmill in 1636.

Janet Pennington is an independent historian with a PhD in early-modern Sussex inn and tavern history. While working as the archivist at Lancing College, she also taught local history and palaeography for the Centre of Continuing Education at the University of Sussex. She is a member of the Wealden Buildings Study Group and a past chairman of the West Sussex Archives Society. Janet grew up at 5 Tudor Close, a five minute walk from your windmill and a painting of the mill by her father adorned her bedroom wall there for 20 years and will be brought along to the talk, together with a small watercolour of West Blatchington Manor House. She lives in Steyning with her husband now, but they had an old cottage at Botolphs, in the windy Adur Valley, from 1977-1993.

Janet gives illustrated talks throughout Sussex, particularly on pubs, aspects of Wiston Estate history and a variety of other subjects, such as the ritual protection of the home and travel in the past.
